Intro to Fabrication
March 2, 2022Week 5
Materials and Fasteners
Fabricate something using primarily two different materials. The materials cannot be acrylic or plywood (unless you are gluing up your own plywood). The work should be held together using fasteners of your choosing.
I ordered brass and aluminium from McMaster because I wanted to start familiarizing myself with metal. I also ordered a set of various studs.
I found a tree branch from a pile of cut down trees in Tompkins Square Park.
I didn’t have a plan for this week except to learn how to work with materials I like and attach them.
I learned later on in class
Had trouble drilling a large hole (idea was to fit in the acrylic tube, or dremel to reveal the inside - maybe next time try drilling a pilot hole first?
Now metal.
I learned how to...
Use the metal shear.
Use the metal hole punch:
Use the riveter.
Used a jig to bend the brass, which we covered in a prior week.
All the parts I made, layed out:
I wanted
I’m happy to have attached parts together in some funky ways, like a stud inside an acrylic tube:
But by the end I think I went overboard. It’s ugly and beautiful and has many sharp ends that will cut and I hate and love it.
These earlier, simpler forms felt like they had more harmony.
I might want to use these brass pieces for next week’s motors assignment.
Things I want to learn:
Sliproll metal.
Lathe metal.
