Sound Art Final

April 28, 2022

Option 1

Create a project proposal for a sound work, incorporating some of the ideas from the class.

Proposal prompt: In the midst of global upheaval, where our realities have shifted so rapidly and previous ways of being have become unsustainable and even impossible, new potentials and possibilities have emerged. As we've turned more inward and introspective, new ideas of living have had time to gestate and form. And with the world starting to reemerge, our sonic environment isn't quite the same as it once was. With that comes new vibrations for us to listen for, as well as frequencies that have left and are never to return. For this open call, artists are asked to propose new sonic works that call our attention to new forms of listening. This can be new ways in which we listen as well as new experiences we can encounter through listening. The works can take the form of audio, photo, performance, writing, installation, sculpture, interactive art, etc. Artists can propose how they would like their work to be presented in any form or space.

Your proposal should include:
  • A 100 word (max) bio - tweak current bio
  • A 100 word (max) artist statement - modify current artist statement to be sound art specific
  • A 250 word (max) project proposal
    - Sound sculpture
    - Explore the sound of our computers: whirrs, etc, with contact microphones
    -
    - (Combine with Religious Robots final) sound of our machines as sounds of current-future religion
    - Sculpture uses natural and humanmade materials at different levels of transformation (wood branch, 2x4, brass, broken laptop)
  • Sketches, diagrams, and/or a prototype of the project
     - Sketches, and a prototype

Signal chain:

Audio interfaces:

Audio Interfacing with Mac via the Scarlett.
In Max I set up the scarlett.

I didn’t end up needing max. Just sent a signal from a contact mic through a field recorder attached to a speaker via 3.5mm.

This was one mic on my left knee and one mic on my heart.

In a later configuration (for the spring show) I sent a signal from two contact mics through an audio interface (the Scarlett 2i2) to my mac. The signal was then played live, looped or recorded in ableton and sent out to one or two speakers via 1/4 jacks.
