Intro to Fabrication
Feb 17, 2022Week 4
I knew I wanted to: work with standoffs, make a clear enclosure, and that I wanted to incorporate or make it contain organic material.
Initial sketches:
I made a run to Canal Plastics to find a flexible plastic sheet.
I found this clear polycarbonate sheet (0.02” thick), but also got solid acrylic tubes in case.
Materials:
-->
--> (to visualize how they overlap - if I want to be more precise about designing the overall form, I can use Rhino or CAD)
I tested if the plastic sheet would fit into the etch -- after the depth of the etch with multiple passes, it fit, but barely (I had to use a lot of force to hold it in place, and it would snap back to flat). So I decided to go with the acrylic tube instead.
I came out of this week’s assignment with a desire to work on more enclosures and many more ideas - I want to make the polycarbonate work in order to create curved/sharp enclosures.
I realized that for posterity, it’d probably be useful to keep track of how much time these projects take.
